Kenyan net pay calculator

One monthly gross in — NSSF, SHIF, the Housing Levy and PAYE off, in the order the law takes them — take-home pay out. Not a copy of our payroll app’s arithmetic: the same code, running in your browser, on the table in force for the month you pick.

In Kenya shillings, before any deduction. Basic plus any cash allowance.

NSSF limits move every February, so the month decides which table applies.

An advance already paid out, recovered from this month after tax.

Same PAYE bands, but no personal relief.

What this is

One person, one month, one gross figure — an estimate to check a number against. It assumes the whole gross is cash pay and a full month worked. For the band-by-band tax working, use the PAYE calculator — same engine, more explanation.

What does this net pay calculator not work out?

Pension contributions, car and telephone benefits, employer housing, overtime, mortgage-interest and insurance relief, mid-month joiners, and anyone paid from two companies on one KRA PIN. Each of those moves the figures. The app handles all of them; this page does not pretend to.

Net pay on common Kenyan salaries

What actually reaches the bank, worked through at seven round monthly salaries — cash pay only, a full month worked, a resident employee claiming personal relief and nothing else. These are this page’s own engine — the same code that writes the payslips — not a transcription, so they move when the statutory table moves. For any figure that is not on this list, use the calculator above.

The share taken rises with salary and there is no single percentage that describes it: SHIF and the Housing Levy are flat on gross, NSSF stops rising once pay passes the Tier II ceiling, and PAYE keeps climbing through the bands. Every figure behind these columns, with its statute section and effective date, is on the tax rates page.

Why do January and February give different net pay?

This calculator reads the statutory table off the payroll month you pick, not off the calendar year. Kenyan tables move in February — the NSSF Tier II ceiling lifts every February under the NSSF Act 2013 phase-in — so January runs on the previous year’s figures. A tool that only knows “this year’s rates” is wrong every January.

What this calculator will not do

It will not let you switch a statutory deduction off. PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy are obligations, not options, so all four always apply. It also assumes the whole gross is cash pay and a full month worked, so benefits, pension, overtime and mid-month joiners are out of scope here — the app handles them.

For what each deduction is, the order they come off in and why the Housing Levy still reduces taxable pay, read statutory deductions in Kenya. For every current figure with its statute section and effective date, the tax rates page.
